We had the pleasure of hosting "Cup of Joe with the CEO" for the month of May. We were able to tell all the attendees a little more about what we do and give them a better understanding of the impact that Promethean Foundation has on the residents of Obion County.
Congressman Kustoff stopped by the Promethean Foundation office on August 24th to learn a little more about what we do here. He was interested to find out that we are privately funded and serve over 200 at-risk children with scholarships in Obion County. Teena Jarmon was able to sit down and talk to him about all of the issues surrounding daycare in our area and some ways he might be able to help. She explained many issues ranging from teacher pay to the lack of available space for children at daycare centers. She informed him that Promethean currently has about 47 children who qualify for scholarships but are not in a daycare center simply because there are no spaces for them. The biggest lack of available space is for babies at this time which makes it hard for parents to go back to work.
She spoke of how the state and federal governments have provided grants to help daycares expand but do not address the wages needed to pay the additional workers. And, if they do provide monetary assistance, it is for bonuses and not helping with the hourly wage. As an example, she told the congressman that a grant provided $1000 bonuses to new hires, but those workers would come to work, get the bonus and then quit.
All in all we had a great visit and certainly appreciated the congressman taking the time to stop by and talk with us about the work we are doing here in Obion County. Together we can make a difference in the quality of Early Childhood Education!

Daycare Centers In The Spotlight
Children's Corner and Kare Bear have both set up Lending Libraries in their centers! Great Job, ladies!
Reading to your children is so important and we applaud these centers for making books available for their parents!

Directors In The Spotlight
We participated in the first ever Obion County Resource Fair on April 20th, 2023. This is an event that we are hoping will continue for many years to come. It was held at the fairgrounds during the Soul Food Café night.
The normal Soul Food Café brings in about 100-175 people. We were given 300 chicken quarters by Tyson in Union City and estimated that we fed about 220-240 mouths.
There were 35 resources/community services that came out and set up tables. There were staff from both Obion County Schools and Union City Schools there to prepare plates and serve our community.
We had students from both schools come out and paint faces and there were 20+ door prizes donated by the vendors. Our amazing community really pulled together to make this night so big in so many ways.
If this does not make you proud to be from Obion County, I don't know what will!
Note from Obion County Communications Director Lauren Kendall:
"Thankful does not even begin to express the feeling that I had on the evening of the First Obion County Resource Fair. Months of planning, communication with vendors, and making the day as successful as we could.
A special recognition goes out to Adult Leadership Obion County. Without this incredible team’s support, leadership, and commitment, much of the day would not have been possible. I am so thankful to be a part of group that saw a vision and never once questioned its potential."
*Speaking of Adult Leadership Obion County, we had not one but two of our Daycare Directors as a part of this program for the 2022-2023 class. We are so proud of the work put in by Nikki Fuller (Children's Corner) and Erin Dalton (Pumpkin Patch 1). Congratulations to you both on your graduation from Adult Leadership Obion County! We can't wait to see the amazing things you will do for our county! Great job ladies!
