How have we met the challenge in Obion County?
In the five years of service in Obion County, the Promethean Foundation has served over 760 children who qualified as “at risk”.
We are in year 4. The children who entered our program as babies in 2004 are approaching their 4th birthday. By the year 2020 we will have collected: 1200 Brigance Screening Scores, 2400 TCAP scores, 4800 teacher surveys, 1200 parent surveys, and 7500 preschool progress notes. The students will be studied in a variety of groups: those entering daycare, those not entering daycare, age when they entered daycare, number of months in daycare, degree of risk for a child, gender, race, and daycare attended.
The Brigance scores collected at this point indicate a strong case for early education. Scholarship children scored in the same range as the average student in Obion County and non-scholarship children scored 10 points lower. We believe the best results are yet to come. We believe the babies who have benefited from the Promethean scholarship since age 2 months will have a greater advantage in the long run. They may be average students, (most of us were only average students), but we believe the advantage for them will be evidenced in the quality of life they lead after spending their early years in an environment that is safe, secure, nurturing, and character building.
They will be better citizens. They will not be as likely to be incarcerated. We are not expecting to see amazing results in a short period of time, but we do expect to see amazing results over an extended period of time.
